Clock Repair and Restoration
Every clock that is repaird by us is completely overhauled.
This requires stripping the clock to its component parts.
Every part is cleaned in an ultra-sonic machine before being cleaned and polished by hand.
Any broken parts are repaired or replaced, pivots are re-faced and new bushes made and fitted. Fusee and grandfather clocks barrels are relined where necassary.
In spring driven clocks we repair or replace broken main springs using specialised equimpemt to avoid spring damage.
Where pinions are worn it may be possible to move the pinion so that the wheels run on an unworn part. This is not always possible in which case new pinions and arbours are cut.
In the event of broken wheels it may also be necassary to cut new wheels.
The clock is then reassembled, the escapement and striking mechanisms adjusted and then the clock is run for a week to perfect the timing.
Clock Dial Restoration
Many clocks have brass dials. Most clocks with a metalic silvered appearance are in actual fact brass.
For example Grandfather / Long Case clocks with brass back plates and silvered chapter rings or copmltely silvered Bracket Clock dials.
The silvered finish becomes worn and blackend over time, we can restore a tired looking dial to its original magnificent condition.
During restoration we dismatle the dial and take each part back down to its base brass layer. We then polish or clean the parts.
The silvered parts are then treated to restore the silvered appearance and laqured to ensure the longevity of the finish.
Painted dials can be touched up where there are chips or more extensive restorations can sympathetically be carried out.

Pinion and wheel cutting
Where possible we move pinions and wheels to run on good parts. However occasionaly the only way to resotre a clock is to cut new pinions with arbours and wheels on the lathe.
